500th Anniversary of the Archbishopric of Vienna
The Archbishopric of Vienna was founded in 1469, when Emperor Frederick III submitted a request to Pope Paul II to establish a diocese. The Pope signed the establishment bull on January 18, 1469. In connection with this event, the former St. Stephen´s Church was raised to the rank of episcopal cathedral, thus becoming the religious centre of the Habsburg empire. In the five hundred years that have passed since then, the archiepiscopal territory was gradually enlarged: today the archbishopric of Vienna comprises the eastern half of the federal province of Lower Austria as well as the city of Vienna. The entire territory has been divided into 28 country deaneries and 15 city deaneries (in Vienna). The archbishopric of Vienna comprises 617 parishes and thus provides pastoral care for approximately two million Catholics. On the occasion of the 500th jubilee of the archbishopric of Vienna, some of the most interesting and valuable statues of saints from St. Stephen´s Cathedral have been selected to serve as motifs of this stamp series. Saints fulfil a very special function for human society, being symbols of a psychological experience of the divine. Throughout Christendom, they stand for a specific form of human existence. Thus the numerous figures of saints that adorn the "Most Holy Cathedral of St. Stephen´s" should also be understood as symbols.
The 1st stamp motif shows “St. Stephen, who embodies human hope for eternal life”
The 2nd stamp motif shows “St. Paul, who embodies the task of preaching the Christian faith”
The 3rd stamp motif shows “a statue of the Madonna of Mercy, who stands for divine protection“
The 4th stamp motif shows “St. Christopher, who symbolises altruistic helpfulness“
The 5th stamp motif shows “ St. George, who embodies the defence of all that is good, true and beautiful”
The last stamp motif shows “St. Sebastian, who stands for the struggle to overcome suffering”
